Whenever opening the floppy pages, turning on the televisions or logging onto the internet, people can see extensive press coverage concerning safety issue of teenagers. With a goal to discourage young people from getting into troubles, some community members propose imposing curfew laws on teenagers, while others are strongly against it, holding that it is their parents or legal guardians' rights to make decisions like that, and they feel that the curfew laws should not be conducted since it would restrict individual students' freedom of social activity.

Freedom of social activity is significant, admittedly. People may argue that young people need to enjoy their free choice of how to spend nights after school for it is a practical practice to foster their social skills. Some would stay together late into the night, chatting over anything that fascinates them, like gossip of Tyler Swift or how vapid calculus is. Some teenagers who share the common interest can spend the whole night playing chess, watching movies or shopping together. However, these people ignore a well-known fact that with the advancement of network technology, teenagers are used to kinds of social online services, such as Facebook, Twitter, and YouTube, through which they can still keep in contact with their friends, having small talks and sharing their ideas, wherever they are. Additionally, the time spent at school is also important to cultivate their social ability: for instance, they need to understand how to cooperate, how to negotiate, and sometimes how to compromise. In that case, why not ask students under the age of eighteen stay at home in night to guarantee their safety?

From a personal perspective, curfew is not harmful due to the fact that I really enjoy the serene and peaceful nights at home. Some may prefer the heavy metal rock music in the bar, but not me. Without the hustle and bustle during the daytime, in my cozy room, I can concentrate more on my schoolwork or painting. Some academic subjects such as physics seem to be a bit challenging for me, so I need to spend extra time after school reviewing what I learned during the daytime. I believe those who are ambitious for a privileged university would also be willing to stay at home, rather than hang out aimlessly. What is more, I am deeply absorbed in charcoal painting: every brush, every shade of colors and every exquisite line can fascinate me completely. In that case, I find myself more creative and passionate in the moonlit night, staying at home, also.

In terms of safety, curfew laws are not only beneficial, but also necessary. We live in communities where bulldoggers or hoboes always hangout at nights, drunk and idle. It is obvious that they usually make troubles out of nothing. The statistics released by New York Times indicate that 67.28% violence take place after 8 pm. Hence it would be reasonable to keep teenagers at home, considering they are factually vulnerable to assaultive injury. Furthermore, as people under the age of 18 mostly lack the ability of distinguishing the right form the wrong, when they are allowed to go out at nights, they are more likely to kill their time in some pubs in which they are prone to some evil activities, such as drug abuse. Therefore, compared to putting them into a relatively unsafe and uncertain circumstance, a restriction like curfew is needed.

Also, when taking young people’s safety and developments into consideration, the statement that, it is their parents or legal guardians’ rights to make decisions like whether they should be kept at home or not, cannot hold water, as young people, is the future of our nation; therefore, the whole community, and even the whole society , should be responsible for them, pay special attention to them, and naturally, adopt strict regulations over them.
